FIND A PROJECT NEAR YOU

Bike recycling is growing, and there are now so many projects that it's difficult to keep track of them. So we thought it would be useful to have an up to date* record of what is going on around the country. The map below shows each bike recycling project by region. We have listed all those that we know about, and have only listed those that are currently operating. To find ther nearest to you, just click on the yellow hot spot. In each section we give a description of the project, address, website address, email and telephone number. There's also a link direct to the relevant website for each organisation -Just click on the logo/picture on the top left of every entry.. Because lots of these projects are run on a shoestring budget, they're not always able to keep open full-time, so make sure you contact them first to save a wasted journey.

Finally, if you find any faults with this web page, or know of a bike recycling project that we don't know of, please drop us a line and we'll add it on. We hope you find this useful.

Black Bridge Bikes was started in January 2008 to create volunteer and training opportunities and hopefully eventually jobs for people in Merkinch -by refurbishing abandoned bikes and then selling them. They are put back on the road by Black Bridge Bikes. Merkinch Pedal Power ‘Black Bridge Bikes’ is a social enterprise run by Merkinch Development Ventures.

Re~Cycle in Colchester collect secondhand bicycles and ship them to Africa. Where bikes are distributed and African projects teach riders the skills to repair and maintain them. Their bikes also help health/AIDS workers reach remote villages and even provide an ambulance service in remote Namibia.

They say: In Britain, millions of bikes are thrown away or lie unused, whilst many people in Africa have no access to transport of any kind. Walking can take up-to 4 hours per day (collecting water, or walking to school). The burden can cripple a family, hampering work and education opportunities. A bicycle cuts travel time to a fraction, even carrying passengers and heavy loads. Bikes give families the extra time to earn, learn and enjoy life.
Donate your unwanted bike to us

Unfortunately they do not have the resources to collect bikes but they have a number of collection centres, and are looking for more.

Lunar-Cycles run a Project just started in 2008, to refurbish, restore and recycle bicycles in Islington, London. However, they sell them to anyone in London or further afield. They obtain bicycles by accepting donations from people trying to dispose of unwanted bicycles, and from varied public organisations. These recycled bikes cost between £50-£100. Wherever possible, they use parts from other, stripped down 'beyond
repair' bikes, in order to keep the 100% recycled ethos intact. Other projects include fully restoring bicycles which have been out of action for a while, whatever their condition, and custom building bicycles with some new parts (approx 40%) which have also had a respray.

The London Borough of Merton run a successful project called 'Recycle a Cycle', based in Mitcham, Surrey. The project collects redundant bicycles from Merton's recycling centres and central police station, then takes them to a central location where young offenders refurbish the bicycles under the supervision of trained adult supervisors. The scheme is actively supported by the local police authority and promoted community support officers and Victim Support Merton.
